Outrigger canoeing hails its origins from the Pacific region some 30,000 years ago. Racing evolved as a natural extension of the peoples use of their craft and their everyday life.
In 1908, the first outrigger canoe clubs were founded in Hawaii and Hui Nalu. The first official canoe race, initially for men, was held in the Hawaiian Islands in Waikiki in 1917.
The sport has since spread to an international level, involving countries from the Pacific and Asian regions as well as New Zealand, USA, Canada, France, England and South Africa.
